Take Action for Black Lives in Honduras

On the morning of Saturday, July 18, four leaders from the Afro-descendant Garifuna community of Triunfo de la Cruz were kidnapped by men in bulletproof vests. This is just the latest violent and racist attack on the Garifuna, following after the recent murder Edwin Fernandez as he was providing COVID-19 relief.

Grassroots International partner, the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH), has organized in this community for decades. In part thanks to your support, the Garifuna won their case in the Inter-American Court on Human Rights in 2015, winning respect and protection for their ancestral rights. However, the Honduran government has not taken any action to comply with the ruling. Instead, Garifuna leaders continue to face violence for defending their ancestral territories and culture in Honduras.
Our partners in OFRANEH are specifically asking our supporters to do the following:
  • The immediate return of the Garifuna leaders, alive and healthy
  • Compliance with the sentence of the Interamerican Court (Caso Triunfo)
  • That the Honduran state – and by extension its supporters, including the United States –  guarantee the security and protection of the members of the community of Triunfo de la Cruz

In recent weeks we’ve seen the power of solidarity. Your solidarity can make a profound difference here today. Add your voice to protect Black lives in Honduras.
