Tell Your Representatives to Vote "No" on Fast Track Authority & the TPP
Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.), Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) just introduced legislation that will revive “Fast Track” trade authority. If Fast Track authority is approved, the TPP could be signed before Congress has a chance to see what is included or vote on it.
Currently the TPP will involve 40 percent of the global economy and with options for other countries to join on later, it’s projected that eventually one-half of all countries could be part of the TPP. This disastrous trade policy focuses on the cheapest goods and services, regardless of costs to the environment, communities or human lives. This will affect food, fishing, agriculture, energy extraction, retail goods, and banking – literally all sectors of our lives.
After three years of discussion, negotiators are still refusing to tell the public and Congress what is exactly being proposed. While secrecy is the rule when dealing with the public, over 600 hundred corporate lobbyists have full access to draft and give input on the text of the TPP. As we’ve seen with past free trade deals like NAFTA, free trade crushes small farmers and producers around the world, while multi-national agribusinesses reap profits.
It’s time to take back control of our trade policy.
